Bersatu Kita Teguh

Seperti yang lu tau sendiri, jualan Blackberry (BB) di Indo tuh udah kayak jualan kacang. Dan karena itu, orang Indo tuh merajalela di dunia maya seperti Facebook dan Twitter.

Contohnya, bulan lalu ada berita bahwa orang Indo tuh pengguna facebook #3 di dunia, setelah US dan UK. Dan katanya sih by the end of this year bakal jadi #2.... Berita lengkapnya klik di sini.

Nah kalo berita kayak begini boleh deh dibanggain.

Tapi...... ada juga berita2 Indo yang menghebohkan dunia sekaligus memalukan citra orang Indo. Seperti contohnya #ariel peterporn yang sempet jadi #1 trending topic di twitter. Duh berita kayak gitu aja bisa menggegerkan dunia..... 

Terus beberapa hari ini juga muncul lagi topic lain yang jadi trending topic juga...... dan yang ini sih GAK BANGET DEH YEEEE....... @_@

Movie Review : Inception

There are movies that make you laugh.

There are movies that make you cry.

And there are movies that make you go between "WOW!" and "HUH?!?!?!?" after you watch it.

The movie INCEPTION definitely belongs to the third category. Not surprising, since the movie is produced and written by Christopher Nolan, whose past work include Memento (2000) and The Dark Knight (2008). The story revolves around dreams and a group of people who are able to enter other people's dreams and steal information or ideas from the mind. In this movie, the team were given a task to plant an idea instead of stealing it, something that is rarely and almost impossible to be done. I find that the movie is a very good movie ...... great visual effects, great cast (more on this later), and a solid storyline. However, I do have to warn you that you have to concentrate and think while watching the movie, otherwise once you're lost, it becomes more complicated as the story goes along.

The main character is played by Leonardo Dicaprio. I've never been a big fan of his movies after Titanic. He tried to change his image after Titanic by starring as a more mature characters (e.g Gangs of New York, Blood Diamond, Shutter Island), but to me, he'll always be the boy that played Romeo & Juliet and Titanic.  Even the beard looks ridiculous on his boyish face. I don't know if the weight gaining is part of the mature look or he's just enjoying life a little too much :P

As for the other cast, I've always loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page. Both are young actors and actress that often stars in indie films (e.g : 500 Days of Summer and Juno). Both gives an excellent performance here, and you can see that Ellen has grown up so much from her geeky Juno days into a beautiful lady. 

The other actors in the movie also gives exceptional performance (Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Marion Cottilard). Each character has a distinct personality but they come together in the brilliant plot.

Overall, I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend you to watch it in the cinemas :)

Mind Your Language

Pertama kali gua ‘officially’ belajar bahasa Inggris tuh pas gua kelas 3 SD.... ikutan ngeles di salah satu tempat les ternama di kota Bandung. Abis dari situ, selain pelajaran di sekola, gua juga sering loncat2 tempat les, iseng2 ikut temen, atau cuma coba2 doang biar dapet temen baru. Gua tuh bersyukur banget that my parents realize the importance of learning English at an early stage…. Coba kalo sekarang baru disuruh belajar, ya susah lah! 

Selain pelajaran di sekola dan juga di tempat les, ada hal2 lain yang membantu gua untuk belajar Inggris. Dulu tuh mami gua sering rental video sinetron Singapore….. nah itu sinetron kan ngomongnya Mandarin, dan subtitlenya Inggris. Dua2nya gua gak ngerti, jadi gua hampir tiap kalimat nanya mami gua ”Ma, itu ngomong apa sih? Apa artinya?” Untung mami gua orangnya sabar, semuanya dijawab, padahal gue sih paling sebel tuh kalo lagi nonton seru ada orang yang nanya gitu hehehe. Lama2 karena gua udah sering nonton, jadi belajar banyak vocab juga dari situ tuh.

Terus juga mungkin karena pengaruh pergaulan, pas jaman2 SMP / SMA tuh temen2 maen gua pada dengernya lagu berbahasa Inggris, nontonnya film2 Hollywood (ya iya lah, masa Bollywood hahaha), nonton acara TV juga yang western2 gitu. Gue inget banget group main gua tuh punya yang namanya ”buku lagu”.... isinya lyrics2 lagu yang kita suka, ditulis rapi2, trus dihias2 gitu...... (i know, it sounds ridiculous now). Since dulu blom ada internet, ya kita dengerin lagunya berulang2 trus cari tau sendiri tuh lyricsnya apa.... hebat kan? Hehehe.....

Abis itu masuklah jaman internet....... di rumah gua mulai berlangganan internet pas koko gua pergi ke Amrik taon 1995. Untuk mempermudah komunikasi, ya kita langganan internet biar bisa email2an. Maklum jaman dulu blom ada msn dkk.... handphone aja blom ada bok!. Berkat si internet itu ya otomatis Inggris gua jadi lebih berkembang lagi. (emang bunga ya bisa ngembang? :P)

Then I left home for Singapore and the adventure continues..... pertama kali ikutan lecture, trus baca textbooknya yang banyak pake terms2 gak jelas yang blom pernah denger sebelomnya….. mau mati rasanya!!! Lecturernya tuh demen banget bilang “this is very simple….” Tiap kali dia bilang begitu, rasanya udah mau maju tonjokin muka dia rame2 hahahaha. But anyway I survived 4 years of torture there haha.

Trus gua juga sempet tinggal di Melbourne for 1 ½ years when I was pursuing my masters degree. Di sana orang2 ngomong Inggrisnya beda lagi….. so I become more appreciative of the different accents that people have.

Abis Melbourne, 我去北京学汉语….. dan ternyata di sana selain belajar Mandarin, Inggris gua juga further improve, since temen2 sekelas banyak bule, dan karena kita sama2 baru belajar Mandarin ya otomatis the common language is English……

Dan sekarang, gue kerja di regional office Asia Pacific. Di kerjaan gue yang ini gue tuh harus interact with 2 levels of people…… di satu sisi itu 15 negara di Asia Pacific, mulai dari Australia sampe India. Nah lu tau sendiri kan for most of the countries, English is not their primary language. Kadang2 gua kalo terima email atau report dari mereka harus cengo dulu beberapa saat, dibaca berulang2, baru deh ngerti apa maksudnya…. 

Apalagi kalo diajak ngomong di telpon…… puyeng puyeng dahhh..... @_@

Nah, apakah inti dari semua cerita ini? Sebenernya sih gua tuh mau nulis tentang common spelling mistakes that people make in writing English...... bukannya gua sombong atau apa ya, tapi kan kalo nulisnya salah ntar malu sendiri loh….. kalo orang bule ngomong indo ngaco2 juga kita ketawain kan….. :P

Anyway, EHMMM!!! Perhatian anak2! Sekarang kita mulai pelajaran Bahasa Inggris bersama saya, Mister Stefan. 

Here are the top 4 most common spelling mistake that I see everyday :

1. Deadline – dateline 

Yang bener tuh deadline, yang artinya “the time by which something must be finished or submitted”. Dateline juga sebenernya ada, tapi artinya beda dan jarang banget dipake (“a line giving the place of origin and usually the date of a news dispatch or the like”) 

2. Getaway - gateaway - gateway

Ini sering dipake kalo orang lagi stress, trus bilang “I need a quick getaway!” (a place where one escapes for relaxation, vacation, etc., or a period of time for such recreation).

Gateaway is not a valid English word, and gateway means “an entrance or passage that may be closed by a gate”. Coincidentally, gedung tempat kerja gua sekarang namanya “The Gateway” hehehe.

3. Rollout - role out

Ini sih gua baru sering denger pas di kerjaan yang sekarang. Gue udah mention kan kerjaan gua tuh di regional office. Jadi tiap kali ada instruction dari global office, salah satu tugas kita tuh harus menyebarluaskan informasi ke 15 negara di Asia Pacific. Nah, rollout ini artinya “the introduction or inauguration of a new product or service, as by an advertising campaign, public announcement, or exhibition”. 

Cuma orang2 tuh suka salah tulis jadi roleout, which is an invalid word…… doesn’t exist in the dictionary. Yang satu ini sih boss gue yang orang UK aja sering salah..... apalagi kita2 ya??? :P

4. Eventhough - eventough

Nah kalo yang ini sih semua tau dong artinya? Bahasa Indonya sih “walaupun”. Common mistake ya kurang pake “H”, which again is an invalid word. Well, I do have to admit I still do make this mistake a lot :P

APHRODITE

The petite pop princess from down under is back! The latest offering from Kylie is an album titled Aphrodite, referring to the Greek Goddess of love, beauty, and sexuality (which perfectly describes Kylie as a performer).

Some artists, like Christina Aguilera, or Madonna, always tries to venture into new territory by changing the genre of music they offer. Kylie, on the other hand,  decided to follow a tried and tested formula. The album is essentially Kylie..... all her songs are similar in nature, with heavy beats, catchy lyrics, and campy dance moves. Not much difference from all her previous albums. But that doesn't mean a bad thing. Sometimes all we need are happy songs that just makes us wanna dance :)

Even though she's now 42 years old, but she's still the same little girl at heart who just want to have some fun. On the song 'Aphrodite', she sings "I'm fierce and I'm feeling mighty, dontcha mess with me, you don't want to fight me". Well the lyrics might say fierce, but with her voice, it just feels like a little girl singing in front of a mirror :P

Or, in Simon Cowell's words : "it's like a kitten trying to be a tigress"

Well, as far as I'm concerned, I'm still a big fan. She will definitely follow this album with a tour (as with her previous albums), and I'm hoping I can get a chance to watch one of her concerts. I have some of her concert DVDs and it looks really really fun. She doesn't necessarily have the greatest voice in the world, but to me, she's a true entertainer.

SINGAPURA

Terinspirasi oleh blog posting ini (click here), dan juga karena jumat sore2 hujan2 begini gue lagi kagak ada kerjaan di kantor, mendingan gue ngeblog aja deh hahaha.

Berikut ini adalah observasi gue setelah lebih dari 10 tahun tinggal di little red dot on the map, a.k.a Singapore. Moga2 berguna untuk teman2 yang belum pernah ke sini dan ada rencana untuk datang.

1. Tisu untuk ‘chop’ tempat

Turis2 yang ke sini biasanya paling kaget sama hal yang satu ini. Jadi kalo di Singapore tuh udah kebiasaan semua orang bawa tisu paket sendiri. Tujuannya tuh buat nge-chop (nge-tag / nandain) tempat, biasanya sih di foodcourt.

Jadi kalau ke foodcourt liat di meja ada tisu, jangan sembarangan diambil ya. Itu tandanya udah ada orang yang mau duduk di situ, tapi dia lagi beli makanannya.

Ini pula penyebabnya kenapa tukang jualan makanan di sini jarang yang kasih tisu gratis. Lha wong semua orang udah bawa sendiri hehehe.

Sebenernya sih gak usah pakai tisu, kadang2 suka ada orang yang nandain pake barang aneh2, kayak payung, koran, document2, dan lain sebagainya. Pokoknya kalo ada barang di meja selain piring bekas, itu tandanya ada orang yang udah mau duduk di situ.

2. It’s OK to wears shorts and slippers everywhere

The main reason for this ya karena di sini tuh panassss dan humid banget. Jadi naturally orang2 pada males dandan rapi2…… the national costume for guys on weekends is t-shirt / polo shirt + shorts / bermudas, dan sendal jepit. Ya tapi at least di sini sendal jepitnya bukan merk swallow, tapi havaianas, atau crocs :P

Mau ke pantai keq, mau ke mall keq, bahkan ke gereja pun kostumnya sama. Kadang2 ya bosen juga, tapi it’s just too damn hot to wear anything else. Lagian kalo lu rapi sendiri, ntar jadi saltum dong :P

3. Jangan lupa bawa payung

Kalau di negara bule ada 4 musim, di Singapore juga gak kalah loh…… 4 musim di sini itu adalah hot, very hot, raining, and raining like there’s no tomorrow. Hehehe….

Maklum lah namanya juga negara tropis…. Kalo lagi hujan di sini tuh bisa heboh banget, lengkap dengan thunder and lightning (di Indo juga sih). Makanya penting untuk kita2 kalo pergi2 bawa payung. Biasanya sih bawa payung lipet aja, jadi bisa dimasukin tas. Gak perlu sampe bawa2 payung golf gitu loh.

Walaupun orang banyak bilang “di Singapore kan semuanya ada underground pass”….. well, that’s not really true. Contohnya tuh mall Paragon yang ada di Orchard Road. Walaupun itu termasuk mall prestigius, dan letaknya percis sebrangnya Ngee Ann City / Takashimaya, tapi tetep tuh kagak ada sambungan bawah tanah ke mana2. Ya kecuali kalo lu nyetir, ceritanya udah beda hehe.

4. Di dalam rumah nyeker

Satu lagi kebiasaan orang Singapore yang beda sama Indo. Kalau di Indo biasa di rumah semua orang pakai sendal...... nah kalau di sini kebanyakan tuh gak pake apa2 alias nyeker. Mungkin alesannya karena kalau pake sendal lantainya lebih cepet kotor, dan kebanyakan orang sini gak ada waktu untuk bersihin rumahnya setiap hari.

Jadi kalau bertamu ke rumah orang di sini, jangan lupa copot sepatu begitu sampai di dalam rumah. Jangan dicopot di luar ya, ntar ilang :P

5. SALE

Jangan terjebak dengan kata2 SALE di sini. Yang namanya sale tuh banyak banget deh di Singapore….. mulai dari chinese new year sale (around jan / feb), trus ada mid year sale (may), trus Great Singapore Sale (juni / juli), national day sale (august), end of season sale (oktober), dan christmas / year end sale (november / desember). So, it’s practically SALE all year long! Jadi kalau misalnya pengen barang tapi gak butuh2 banget, tungguin aja sampe SALE baru beli hehe.

Lagian ada beberapa toko yang dari dulu sampe skrg tulisannya closing down saleeee mlulu, tapi kagak tutup2. Mungkin yang punya toko mikir kan turis paling cuma 1 atau 2 hari di sini, mana tau kalo tokonya gak jadi close down hehehe.
