Movie Review : Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part One

Let me start first with the storyline, just for the sake of all of you who are too lazy to read the books. I will not go into details, just the big picture. Continuing from the last book, now Dumbledore is dead and the whole world (magical and muggles alike) is in chaos, with Voldemort getting stronger every day and his army of death eaters growing by the numbers. Just before he died, Dumbledore asked the trio (Harry, Hermione, and Ron) to find the remaining horcruxes (things magically enchanted to contains part of Voldemort's soul) and destroy them so that V-man can be destroyed once and for all. So they go on a journey with very little clue of where to go or what to do. Most of the time they are just moving from forest to forest and try not to get caught by the bad guys. At the end of the movie, they managed to destroy one horcrux, but still have another 4 to find and destroy.

At one point of time, they discovered the legend of the Deathly Hallows, which turns out to be the 3 most powerful items in the magical world. Legend says that the person who have these 3 items will be master of Death itself. The first item is the most powerful wand, named the Elder Wand. The second item is a stone that can bring the dead back to this world. It is called the Resurrection Stone, and the whereabouts of it is still unknown up to this point of time. The third item is the Invisibility Cloak, which makes the owner, um... invisible (d'oh!!). Harry actually already owns this item since the beginning without even knowing it.

V-man, pissed because his own wand seems to always be on the losing end against Harry's wand, go on a quest to find the Elder Wand. After some torturing and investigation, he found out that it is actually Dumbledore's wand. So he go and open up D-man's coffin and took the wand for himself. And that's the end of the first movie.....

Now on to the movie review. Having read all the books (some of them even more than one time) and watch all the previous 6 movies, I don't really have a high expectation for this movie. To me, the movies are a nice visual treat, but what I always get from the previous movies is that they always screw up the storyline and leave out many details that makes the books magical.

However, this time they actually managed to get it right. Well, there are still a few minor modifications, but it is still bearable and doesn't affect a lot to the main storyline.





OK I have to admit some details are best to be left in the books, like the joke that Fred (or is it George?) makes when he lost his left ear, and the other twin ask him how he feels. He actually said "Saintlike. I'm holey, get it?". I was smiling when I read that in the book, but in the movie theater, there was no response from the audience, because they just don't get it. Or perhaps it's just the bloody thick British accent that they had. 


By the way, doesn't the poster above reminds you more of James Bond rather than Harry Potter? It's nice to see Emma Watson blossomed into a beautiful woman, and Daniel Radcliffe becoming more and more like a serial killer mature. Sadly, the same can't be really said for Rupert Grint. Sorry, Ron, but you're just the same ugly boy as before, only with messier hair and even more contorted facial features.


Can't wait for the 2nd part, coming in July 2011! Hope they don't mess up the epic battle at Hogwarts.

Movie Review : R.E.D.

R.E.D is another action comedy movie that is loosely adapted from a comic book series. The main character is Frank Moses (played by Bruce Willis), a former CIA agent who is now retired and live a lonely life in the suburbia. The only companion he has is his pension agent, Sarah (played by Mary Louise Parker). They chat a lot over the phone, but they never met each other in person. One day, a team of hit squads comes to his house and tried to kill him. So, after he killed them, he protected Sarah by kidnapping her and forcing her to go with him to find his old mates (Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren). Together they found out who is after them, boom boom boom, and in the end they get their revenge. 

In the movie, R.E.D stands for Retired and Extremely Dangerous. Well, perhaps they got the color wrong, because to me, it's more like B.L.U.E = Boring, Lame and Uninteresting Elderly (people). The fact that I can think of that abbreviation WHILE watching the movie says everything. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against old people, but I just don't think that they should star in action movies anymore. Another excellent example : The Expendables.

To me, Mary Louise Parker gave a good comical performance in this movie. Bruce Willis is also always great being a tough guy. However, the movie was brought down by boring, predictable plots, unbelievable action scenes (is it really THAT easy to break into the CIA office??), and the general slowness of the conversations. Helen Mirren was OK, but I'll take my Hit Girl over her character anytime, thank you very much. Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich was just cuckoo, and I never really liked them anyway.

So, my advice is to skip this movie and save your money to buy popcorn next week when watching Harry Potter :)

Movie Review : Megamind

Setelah sekian lama gak nonton bioskop (terakhir ya Eat Pray Love itu), akhirnya tadi sempet juga nonton Megamind. Tadinya sempet bingung mau nonton Due Date apa Megamind, tapi dari baca2 review sama kata temen2 sih bagusan Megamind. 

Ceritanya lumayan simple sih. Tokoh utamanya itu ya si Megamind itu, dengan kepala biru gedenya. Ceritanya dia tuh dari planet lain, trus pas masih baby planetnya mau hancur, trus bonyoknya kirim dia ke bumi. Nah dari planet sebelah juga ada baby yang nasibnya sama, namanya si Metroman. Mereka berdua sampe ke bumi, tapi si Metroman mendarat di rumah orang kaya, sedangkan si Megamind mendaratnya di penjara. Since dia bentuknya aneh, anak2 lain pada gak suka sama dia. Akhirnya dia jadi jahat deh. Dari kecil sampe gede mereka kerjaannya cuma berantem melulu, dan si Megamind gak pernah menang. Until one day...... akhirnya dia berhasil. Dan si Metroman mati. Well, that's just the first 10 minutes of the movie. Apa yang terjadi selanjutnya? Nonton sendiri ya..... :)


Menurut gua sih film ini masuk ke kategori biasa banget. Ya memang storylinenya lumayan original.... not your typical good guys vs bad guys. Pengisi suaranya juga beken2..... ada Will Ferrel, Tina Fey, dan bahkan Brad Pitt. Ada beberapa scene yang lucu juga. Tapi overall  tetep menurut gua sih gak ada greget2nya.... taon depan juga udah lupa deh ada film ini.

Movie Review : Eat Pray Love

Eat Pray Love (EPL) is another movie adapted from a book (seriously, it's an epidemic now..... run for your life while you still can) by Elizabeth Gilbert . I haven't read the book yet, so I can't really comment about the differences. But all my friends who have read the book say that the book is not so good.

The story is about a successful writer who suddenly realized that she is not ready to settle down in her marriage (then why did you get married in the first place??? Women! *sigh*). So she ended her marriage and accidentally (yeah right) find a cute younger man that she screws likes. However, she still finds herself unhappy and so decided to took 1 year off to travel around the world and "find herself again". She decided that she would spend 4 months in Italy (EAT), 4 months in India (PRAY), and ended the year in Bali (LOVE). 

I have just found out that it is actually based on a true story. However, in real life, the trip was sponsored in return of her writing the book.

OK first of all, before I even begin to review the movie, take a closer look at this sentence : 4 months in Italy, 4 months in India, and ended the year in Bali. Notice anything stupid?? Well, for those of you who flunked geography in school, let me tell you Italy and India are countries, but (surprise surprise!! *rolls eyes*) Bali is NOT a country. It is an island located in the country INDONESIA. Seriously, how stupid can you be? Nevertheless, the movie still generates quite an interest for Bali, and ultimately Indonesia. So I guess it's not that bad. But please... get your facts right next time.

Now, on to the movie..... I think it should be called Eat Sleep Love rather than Eat Pray Love. Or better still, we can just skip the whole middle part and call it Eat Love :P. That way we can save about 30 minutes of movie time (btw the movie is quite long..... 2 hours and 20 minutes... but then again, I think it's kind of hard to document a year of life in 2 hours 20 minutes).

Anyway, the 'pray' part, where she travels to India, is just boring. She went to a kind of monastery where people chants, meditates and try to find their spirituality. Over there she met an old dude from Texas, who is just annoying and rude to everyone, especially her. I don't like this guy at all. Towards the end of her India trip, the old dude started crying and tells his story (why he ended up there blah blah blah). I think it's supposed to be an emotional scene, but sorry I just don't get it. I can't even understand what he's saying, and I almost fell asleep.

Also, the Italy and Bali scenes are beautiful and showcases the beauty of the places. It does make you want to go there someday. But in India, they are showing the dirtiness and crappiness of the places.

OK let's move on to the Bali scenes. Hadi Subiyanto, who plays Ketut Liyer (the 9th generation medicine man who prophesies about Liz's return to bali),  is quite funny and convincing as a medicine man who talks cryptically. But I doubt the audience can really understand what he's saying, especially with his thick Indonesian accent. Christine Hakim, who plays Wayan (Liz's friend while she was in Bali), is great for the role, except for the fact that she's not Balinese. But nobody really cares anyway, especially when they don't know where Bali really is :P

Liz's love interest is played by Javier Bardem (a.k.a Mr. Penelope Cruz). I don't know much about this guy before.... I don't think I have ever seen any of his movies. But suddenly here he is, and he will be guest starring on Glee as well. To be honest, I'm not really impressed by his acting in this movie. 

So, overall I think this movie is pretty to look at (Italy and Bali only, please), but the story doesn't have much depth into it. It's not really a comedy, nor it's a chick flick. Julia Robert shines (as always), but she's the only anchor to the whole movie. 

Movie Review : Charlie St Cloud

Another movie that is adapted from a book (The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud by Ben Sherwood). The story is about a young man who is living with his mother and little brother (their dad left them when they were little). He just finished high school and is about to go to Stanford on a sailing scholarship (is there really such a thing?), but his dreams were crushed in a car accident, in which his little brother died.

He then takes the blame for it and could not let go of his dead brother. He gave up all his dreams, works in the cemetery where his brother was buried and "play baseball" every day with his imaginary dead brother for the next 5 years. Until one day a girl comes along, they did the nasty (well, sort of.....), and he decided that sex is more fun than playing baseball with his brother's ghost. 

This film is THE make or break movie for Zac Efron. Previously he is known as the "high school musical boy", and now he's trying to take on more mature roles. Well, I guess his acting is not bad, but the whole story is quite boring and there's really nothing much to explore. So, I'm quite disappointed and should have just waited for the DVD to come out. I give it 2 out of 5 stars. 

The only memorable scene was "making love with the ghost of a semi-dead girl in a cemetery". Now THAT'S original! ;-)

Combo Review : The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Män som hatar kvinnor)

Ever since I got my iPad last month, I have been trying to maximize using it (biar gak berasa rugi gitu loh). One of the application that I have been using quite a bit is iBooks, which is a fantastic e-reader. I really love the built in features, such as auto orientation, the option to change font type and size, sephia mode, and not forgetting the built in dictionary. So while reading, if you don’t know the meaning of any word, you can just tap on it and the dictionary definition will pop up. NICE! :)

Anyway, the first book that I load into the application is “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”. It is a fiction novel by Swedish author / journalist Stieg Larsson. There are 2 other books in the series, making it a trilogy, often called the Millenium Trilogy (which refers to the publication company that the main character worked in)

Honestly I haven’t heard much of this book and author until recently. It turns out that the author is actually deceased in 2004, and he was more of a politican rather than a fiction novel writer. The books were written in his past time, and he only wrote them for himself. He did not attempt to publish it until shortly before his death. That is why the first book was only published in 2005, one year after his death. It become an international phenomenon, and by March 2010, the series have sold 27 million copies in more than 40 countries. He is also the first author to sell more than one million e-books on Amazon.com.

Anyway, enough with the introduction. Let’s get on to the book review….

The two main characters in the book is a journalist named Mikael Blomkvist, and a peculiar girl named Lisbeth Salander. At the beginning of the book they are two strangers, and I feel like I’m reading two different story, jumping back and forth between one another, and I must admit the first few chapters of the book was quite boring. But, looking back now, it does provide key background information that helps you to understand why the characters behave in a certain way later in the story.

Anyway the main plot revolves around the disappearance (and possible murder) of a young girl (Harriet Vanger) that happened 40 years ago in an isolated island at northen Sweden. Harriet is the niece of a very powerful and successful businessman named Henrik Vanger, previously head of the Vanger corporation. He is now a retiree and have passed on the corporation to Martin Vanger, his nephew (and also Harriet’s brother). There are also other characters, mainly from the Vanger clan.

Henrik asked Mikael to help him with the investigation, but before he does that, he asked Lisbeth (who is a part time private investigator) to do a background check on Mikael. Lisbeth became aware of Harriet’s case and was intrigued. And so she did some investigation on her own. In the middle of the book, Mikael’s and Lisbeth’s paths crossed again, and they combine their efforts and in the end managed to solve the mystery. Along the way they uncovered some terrible secrets involving rapes and murders. I won’t spoil too much of the story here. Pokoknya seru deh! :)

Overall I think it’s a great book with gripping storyline. As mentioned, the beginning was quite slow, but as I get into the main storyline, I’m totally hooked. Now I can’t wait to start reading the 2nd book “The Girl Who Played With Fire”.

OK now moving on to the film review…..

Following the success of the book, it was adapted to a film Män som hatar kvinnor (Men Who Hate Women), released in 2009. The main story is the same as the book (ya iya lah, masa beda? Hehehe). The main characters were played by Swedish actors and actresses, with Michael Nyqvist as Mikael Blomkvist, and Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander.

There have been many movies that are adapted from books, and most of them failed miserably. The problem with this kind of movies is always the same : if you read the book first, then you will feel that there is a lot of scenes missing (it’s difficult to cram 600 pages into 2 hours of movie). But if you don’t read the book first, you would probably be confused by the characters, because the movie skips the introductions and often goes straight into the main plot.

Here’s my thoughts of the film adaptation : (WARNING : SPOILERS AHEAD)

  It’s nice to finally have a visual of the scenery, although it’s not as pretty as I imagined it would be.
• 
  
  Noomi Rapace is perfect in portraying Lisbeth, while I think Michael Nyqvist is just OK. I imagined Mikael Blomkvist to be more handsome and not so fat :P
• 
  
  Harriett Vanger is just as I imagined, but my imagination of the other characters are way off (Martin Vanger, Erika Berger, Cecilia Vanger). I imagined that they are good looking people, and not so old.
• 
  
  The “torture chamber” is also not like what I imagined at all. I thought it is a dark and dirty dungeon, but in the movie it is an all white room with bright lights (reminds me of an operating theatre in hospitals).
• 
  
  As expected, a lot of the side stories are changed or not even mentioned, which includes

                o Blomkvist relationships with Erika Berger and Cecilia Vanger. I guess with all the violence in the story, adding adultery and casual sex partners was a little too much, even for Swedish people.

                o The cover up (in the book, only Henrik, Frode, Mikael and Lisbeth know that he is actually working on Harriet’s case. They told everyone else that Mikael is working on a biography for Henrik, which is a perfect cover up for allowing Mikael to ask everybody about their past)

                o How Henrik convinced Mikael to work for him (in the book, at first Mikael was not interested to work on the case, but Henrik promised him some key information that can clear Mikael’s name in exchange for the work). In the film, Mikael suddenly agreed to work on the case, which is a bit weird, in my opinion.

                o How Mikael discovered the connection between the writing in Harriet’s diary with the bible passages.

                o The timeline is changed quite a bit (in the book, Mikael went to jail in the middle of the investigation, but in the film he went after the case is finished).

But anyway, overall I think it’s a good movie. Now we just have to wait for the Hollywood adaptation of the movie. The main characters will be played by Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara; and the movie will be released in December 2011 (gile lama ajeeee…)

Movie Review : Inception

There are movies that make you laugh.

There are movies that make you cry.

And there are movies that make you go between "WOW!" and "HUH?!?!?!?" after you watch it.

The movie INCEPTION definitely belongs to the third category. Not surprising, since the movie is produced and written by Christopher Nolan, whose past work include Memento (2000) and The Dark Knight (2008). The story revolves around dreams and a group of people who are able to enter other people's dreams and steal information or ideas from the mind. In this movie, the team were given a task to plant an idea instead of stealing it, something that is rarely and almost impossible to be done. Full story, click here (although I highly recommend NOT to know the story before you watch it)

I find that the movie is a very good movie ...... great visual effects, great cast (more on this later), and a solid storyline. However, I do have to warn you that you have to concentrate and think while watching the movie, otherwise once you're lost, it becomes more complicated as the story goes along.

The main character is played by Leonardo Dicaprio. I've never been a big fan of his movies after Titanic. He tried to change his image after Titanic by starring as a more mature characters (e.g Gangs of New York, Blood Diamond, Shutter Island), but to me, he'll always be the boy that played Romeo & Juliet and Titanic.  Even the beard looks ridiculous on his boyish face. I don't know if the weight gaining is part of the mature look or he's just enjoying life a little too much :P

As for the other cast, I've always loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page. Both are young actors and actress that often stars in indie films (e.g : 500 Days of Summer and Juno). Both gives an excellent performance here, and you can see that Ellen has grown up so much from her geeky Juno days into a beautiful lady. 

The other actors in the movie also gives exceptional performance (Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Marion Cottilard). Each character has a distinct personality but they come together in the brilliant plot.

Overall, I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend you to watch it in the cinemas :)

Movie Review : The Losers

Just come back from the cinema, watching The Losers. Didn't really do any background check on this movie before watching it. I just saw the trailer and posters everywhere around the island, and decided to risk my $8 and 90 minutes. 


The plot revolves around 5 special forces guys who were betrayed in Bolivia while they were on  a mission. The bad guy thinks that they are all dead, but they survived. 4 months later, enter Aisha (Zoe Saldana), who suddenly shows up and give them a proposition to catch the bad guy. The movie is another adaptation from a comic book series (seems like the trend nowadays). In fact, it really does feel like you're reading a supersized comic book when you watch the movie. Very, very comical, with all the slow motion, graphic pop ups, and witty one-liners. 


In a way, it kinda feel like a good try to replicate the A-Team (the remake of which, by the way, will be showing next month).


Overall, it is an average movie with predictable storyline, enough action (coming from Jeffrey Dean Morgan), comedy (Chris Evans) and sexy babe (Zoe Saldana), which will make you entertained for 90 minutes but you will soon forget about it. Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. We don't need blockbusters all the time. Sometimes all we need is a good night out at the cinema. 


So go ahead and watch it if you got nothing better to do. Or you can just wait for the DVD to come out :P

Movie Review : Valentine's Day

I know it seems like I'm in a movie marathon weekend, but it's nothing like that. This morning I just woke up too early and didn't know what to do, so I decided to watch Valentine's Day the movie, which I missed when it was showing in the cinema.

The concept of the movie is like Love Actually, where it follows a bunch of people in L.A on Valentine's Day, each have a storyline relating to L.O.V.E. All the big names are there, such as Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper etc etc. Hey, even Taylor Swift makes her acting debut in this movie (Taylor girl, you should stick to singing, yeah? Please give up acting :P). 

With all the big names in there, people would have big expectations about the movie. So am I. However, I am so glad that I didn't waste $10 (and 2 hours) watching this movie in the cinema. The storyline is very predictable, the characters are weird, lots of unnecessary scenes not relating to anything, and the timeline is absolutely absurd (Jennifer Garner's character is able to drop by a flower shop in the morning, teach elementary school, fly to San Fransisco, go to the hospital to find out that her boyfriend is a lying pig, fly back to L.A, serve dinner, go to a party, and find true love, ALL IN ONE DAY!).

The only notable acting that I like is Anne Hathaway, who played a phone sex operator. She is just talented with words :)

Overall, I give it 2 out of 5. Totally not worth watching in the cinema, and also not worth the DVD.

And for the record, I do not give this movie a bad review because I am single, lonely, and miserable. A good movie needs to have a good script to begin with. Superstars doesn't equate good movie. It does, however, guarantee you at least one weekend as #1 box office. But it goes down quickly after that. 

So, for all of you suckers who still believe in love.... well, good for you. But I still prefer watching Kick-Ass anytime of the year :P

Movie Review : Kick-Ass

Another great movie that I've just watched in the cinema : Kick-A**! It's one of those 'sleeper' hits, where you don't really expect it to be a box office #1 movie, since there's no really big stars who acted in this one (well, except if you count Nicholas Cage, but c'mon..... yes he was good in some movies [Con Air, Face/Off], but most of his other movies are crap [National Treasure, Ghost Rider]).

The story is based on a comic book, and the main character in this movie is Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Johnson), who is a high school student who is often bullied and mugged in the streets of New York. He wonders why nobody ever tried to be a superhero, like in the comic books. So he decided to don a ridiculous green suit and calls himself Kick-Ass. Of course, having no real power, he got beaten up by the gangsters, and ended up in hospital. But he didn't give up, and actually got better the second time round. 

Meanwhile..... there's a father-daughter team (Big Daddy and Hit Girl) who has a different agenda, but somehow got entangled in the action. The other character is called Red Mist, who is actually the son of the main enemy, but he pretended to be Kick-Ass' friend, so that he can lure him into a trap. For detailed story, click here.

Aaron Johnson did a good job playing the lead character, delivering the funny lines, even when it's supposed to be a serious scene (e.g : when he was about to get killed, he said "now I'll never know what really happens on LOST...."). But, the real star of the movie is actually Hit Girl, played brilliantly by Chloë Grace Moretz, a relatively unknown child actress. She really stole the show with all the words coming out of her mouth, and also all the actions that you would not expect from a 11 year old girl. No wonder this movie got an R rating......

Hit-Girl: “You just contact the Mayor’s office, he has a special signal he shines in the sky. It’s in the shape of a giant c*ck.”

Hit-Girl: “Okay you c**ts. Lets see what you can do now.”

Big Daddy: “Have you thought a little more about what you might want for your birthday?”

Hit-Girl: “Can I get a puppy?”
Big Daddy: “You wanna get a dog?”
Hit-Girl: “Yeah, a cuddly fluffy one. And a Bratz movie star make over Sasha.”
[Big Daddy looks shocked.]
Hit-Girl: “I’m just f**cking with you Daddy… I’d love a bench made model 42 butterfly knife.”

Overall, I give this movie 4.5 out of 5, but that's only because Nicholas Cage is in it, and because the quality of the picture is not sharp... not sure if it's because of the cinema I was in or because it was a low budget movie. The storyline, the acting, the actions.... totally kicks ass!!!

Oh, and it also has a kick-ass soundtrack to go along with the movie...... sung by none other than Mika, who looks like a skinner version of Kick-Ass in the video.

Movie Review : Zombieland

It's been a while since I did any movie or music review, but I just want to share this interesting movie that I've just watched. The title is ZOMBIELAND, released in October 2009.

The story is set in America, where it has now become Zombieland. Almost all people have become a zombie, and there are only a few survivors left. The main character is a nerdy, Michael Cera-ish boy called Columbus (couldn't quite catch his real name). He's one of the few survivors of the zombie apocalypse, and he is on his way to Columbus, Ohio, to see if his parents are still alive. Along the way, he met Tallahase, Wichita, and Little Rock. Each of them have a different objective, but somehow they stick together because they are the only survivors left. For full story, click here.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! It is sooo wrong in so many levels, but yet it is entertaining. It has enough blood and gory scenes to make you wanna vomit (warning : do not eat while watching this movie :P), and yet it is a comedy. It's like the Hollywood version of Shaun of the Dead, which I also love.


I must admit it's not everybody's cup of tea, but if you like zombie movies AND comedy, why not combine them together? It's like an episode of Friends where Rachel made a traditional English trifle, but somehow she mixed up the recipes, and ended up putting beef in it. The Joey said "Beef? GOOD! Custard? GOOD!". 

Overall, I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars (I never give perfect scores :P)
